the fact is
so i learned things today form this podcast called: "things you should know"
and they are in fact things you should know, especially if you are a game show contestent.
the following useless facts are for my dearly wedded freinds
1. the wedding ring is placed on the finger b/c it was thought that there was a nerve in your ring finger that led to your heart. and the ring acts like a cuff around your heart.
2. bridesmaids would all dress as the bride would as to confuse evil spirits- which now translates to the bridesmaids in cotton candy colored taffeta and the bride herself in white as to stand out. the bride best be careful of those evil critters
3. the groom carries the bride over the threshold as to keep an evil spirit from entering her body, because it was thought the easiest way to enter a body was thru the feet.
all and all all of these supersticions were to keep the bride from cursing the family.

My bf is in the animation biz and he and i stumbled upon the coolest looking movie. Coraline! Its stop motion in 3D. for those of you unfamiliar with such terms think of stop motion as the california raisins commercial or those amazing holiday movies with rudolph. its a great form of amimation and an even greater movie. to promote the movie they sent out 50 boxes to other animation studios and blogs( they seem to have a special fondness of the knitting community)-which is genius by the way. they are so beautiful, containing little relics, props from the movie, some have what they call "bibles" which give decriptions of the characters and map out the movie, and articulate personal letters to each recipiant. “something special. Something handcrafted. We only made 50 of these something specials, and we think yours will be right up your alley."
go here for more of these incredible treasures.
and here to check out this much anticipated movie! it comes out in febuary kiddies!

daniela kamiliotis
daniela kamiliotis is a designer right here in midtown, who just happens to also be a costumer, which is the real reason i became interested in fashion. my father and grandfather were costumers at 20th century fox. my grandpa was head costumer and worked on the sound of music and the poseidon adventure amoung others. they dazzle me with stories of hangin with reagan and paul newman attending family dinners. but back to daniela- the selby did a photo essay on her in her studio and it is to die for. litereally id die for her office or at least a few of her bejeweled dressed hanging within it.

woven play
i stumbled upon this site and it just happens they are just down the street from my office. this is what ive always wanted to create. its funny because just this weekend i was talking to a 4th grade teacher who told me her students "dont know how to think". that they have no imaginative thought. they can not write special stories about dragons and balloons because they have no reason to think imaginatively when the shows and videogames spell it all out for them.
i want to make these little outfits for my neices and baby isabella and baby katie other adoptive neices. maybe mermaid fins and feathered costumes-to make sure their think machines stay working properly.

so i hate to say this but i am beginning to resent fashion. dont get me wrong i love fashion, i love dressing up in silly little outfits and running around town. but the thing is retail is so difficult. marketing to the masses that dont really understand fashion. they understand what the american idols are wearing on tv, not so much the ridiculous but genius prints of jeremy scott and the like. the head designer here went to school with jeremy scott but is stuck creating slinky garments for women afraid to experiment with anything more than florals and animal prints. we are in paisley mode here and its killing me. ive always been envious of the graphic designers, in their sleek offices with their pool tables and pinball machines, espresso machines and mac computers. the majority of employees are not all women and they seem to be all good natured from what ive seen. im not calling my coworkers ill mannered but they are all women with tempers and periods. i talk to my old room mate and he mentions his friday afternoon happy hours at work, how his design firm is not suffereing and how they actually hired a new designer. we fired 15. i still dream of designing my own childrenswear line but finances are slim. the economy is a boa constrictor slowly squeezing the life out of us. and the bf is out of a job, his show went on a hiatus and when he started freelancing at a new show they closed all of thier ny offices- ny rent is too high especially in times sq. so whats a girl to do? i have no coping strategies for this recession or depression as it is newly named. all i can do is stay stagnent until some opportunity peeks its little golden head over the clouds.

anonymous post.
work is boring today. i have things to do but i dont feel like doing them. all ive done is read books and talk to chris on gmail messenger. i dont feel like designing for the chico's lady today. if i have to create another paisley i just might scream. when will the weekend get here. i feel dirty because the water was shut off at the apt. the landlord isnt picking up the phone. im tired of people calling me sister here. i never understood that concept. i do not have a sister. i have a brother. is it a fashion thing to be sisters with all your coworkers? i'm over trying to be the nice cutesy girl. it was a mask i wore well all thru college. remember when elizabeth raymond and i were just the opposite, that was fun. i still secretly call her a gossip about things i shouldnt. maybe ill go to miami be be not good for a while. the world is not all sunshine and daisies ladies and gentlemen. ugh.
BREAKING NEWS: i have posted this in the bathroom me and my "sisters share"
someone farted big time in the bathroom, whoever is responsible please spray after yourself in the future or i will personally find a way to make your day as stinky as you have made mine!

lesley arfin-read her.
so tuesday night after i voted for our new presedent elect i decided i needed to do research for the book my crew is working on. so i boarded the train and stopped by the union sq. barnes and noble, not considered one of the coolest bookstores in nyc, we have strand for that -but useful for the research i was doing. i found what i needed and headed to the check out line. like everything in the union sq. area lines were long so i began purusing the tables of books set up to trap bored line dwellers like myself. and i stumbled upon a gem. a book called "Dear Diary". Now I am not much of a Vice reader. I suppose it is my unwullingness to spend the precious $ i have on something as frivolous as a magazine. Buuuut now i might just so i can read what this little lady puts in there. She has a way with words let me tell ya. And i finished this book in 2 days flat. She is such a badass. This book is a lot abotu drug use but not in a trainspotting, requieum for a dream type of way. Lesley Arfin is a hero of mine now. Is that wierd to say. Yeah, but im ok with it. She lives in the city. And after googling her-im sucha creep- i found her blog. But think about it she, like many of us, probably googles herself on a regular basis so im no worse than her. and better yet by the mere act of me posting this to my blog i am giving her a little something xtra to read. check out her book kids. its amazing.
Marije Vogelzang
A friend of mine, anthony cooper, introduced me to the most amazing danish-umm i guess you could call her a food artist... there are real names for this but i like food artist-it seems more accessable. Marije Vogelzang. I have always had a soft spot in my heart for danes because my mother has told me so many storied of her life in Denmark. I guess I am also a bit jealous.
Back to Marije- her food design is incredible. She creates interactions with food. Food as fine art. What an amazing concept. But its not so much the food as it is the act of eating the food. This woman is incredible.
I wish i could show you pix but her site is flash and i am not apt enough at the interwebs to display flash pix. but in one of her pieces she took forks and attached them to long sticks and stuck strawberry snacks to them and called them butterflies. when a breeze caught the forks they waved around and flew like little butterflies.
